In most modern cars, vans etc. the behaviour of the engine the ABS (anti lock braking system) & the air bag system is controlled by a microprocessor which is called the electronic control unit (ECU). This unit collects information from sensors distributed throughout the engine & takes action to correct those readings which are outside the tolerance set by the vehicle manufacturers. Those readings which are too far out of tolerance to be corrected by the ECU & cause poor engine performance, give rise to fault codes which are stored in the ECU's memory. The scanner shown on the right when plugged in to an engine's ECU can read these codes, providing the mechanic with a powerful aid to fault diagnosis
